Compare Clay Bodies
| Clay Body | Firing Range | Shrinkage | Workability | Best For | Common Pitfalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earthenware | Cone 06-04 | 6-8% | Very easy to shape, forgiving | Decorative pieces, tiles, low-fire glazes | Can crack if too thick, not food-safe unless glazed |
| Stoneware | Cone 6-10 | 10-12% | Moderate, needs even thickness | Mugs, bowls, functional ware | Warps if dried too fast, needs proper bisque |
| Porcelain | Cone 6-10 | 12-15% | Tricky, tears easily | Thin-walled pieces, translucent effects | Cracks if handled roughly, high shrinkage |
| Raku | Cone 06-04 | 5-7% | Good for hand-building | Decorative pieces, crackle glazes | Thermal shock risk, not for functional ware |
Common Mistakes and Fixes
Using High-Fire Clay in a Low-Fire Kiln
Stoneware or porcelain fired below maturity stays porous and weak. If your kiln only reaches cone 06, stick with earthenware.
Skipping the Sample Test
Glaze looks different on every clay body. Always test on a small tile before glazing your main piece.
Uneven Wall Thickness
Thick sections dry slower and crack. Aim for consistent walls, especially at the base.
Drying Too Fast
Cover pieces with plastic and dry slowly. Rushing causes warping and cracks, especially in stoneware.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my kiln only fires to cone 06?
Use earthenware clay. It matures at low fire and works well for decorative pieces and tiles. Avoid porcelain or high-fire stoneware, as they will not vitrify properly.
Can I use stoneware for hand-building?
Yes, but some stoneware bodies are better for wheel throwing. Look for a clay with grog or sand for hand-building to reduce cracking.
Why does my glaze look different than the sample?
Glaze color depends on clay body, thickness, and firing schedule. Test on a sample tile first.
How do I store leftover clay?
Keep it in an airtight bag with a damp sponge. Check weekly and add water if it dries out.
